Environmental & Conservation
Policy Statement |
|
The Milnerton Racecourse Nature
Reserve comprises of two
non-contiguous natural areas
separated and surrounded by the
up-market residential
development of Royal Ascot. The
management of these two areas
resides with the City of Cape
Town as the landowner. This is
accomplished through the
Environmental Management
Committee which comprises
several stakeholders including
the Royal Ascot Master Property
Owners Association and Gold
Circle. |
|
As the area contains an
unprecedented concentration of
endangered plant species as well
as good examples of Cape Flats
Dune Strandveld and Cape Flats
Sand Fynbos vegetation its
preservation is of regional
importance. To achieve this, the
implementation of the
Environmental Management System
(EMS) will strive to: |
|
|
Ensure sound stewardship and
conservation of the area through
a well-researched and rigorous
annual plan of operation (APO). |
|
|
Monitor the effectiveness of the
EMS and on-the-ground
management through internal
checking and an annual review. |
|
|
Utilise the review process to
continually improve the EMS in
keeping with improved technology
and conservation practice. |
|
|
Take cognisance of, and comply
with, applicable environmental
and health and safety
legislation, as well as
municipal by-laws. |
|
|
Utilise products, service
providers and contractors who
have proven environmental best
practice records, and who employ
safe operation practices that
minimize environmental impacts. |
|
|
Raise awareness amongst
surrounding residents with
respect to environmental
conservation and protection, and
individual environmental
responsibility through campaigns
and this website. |
|
|
Encourage stakeholder
participation in management
functions through community
representation on the
Environmental Management
Committee and coordinated
liaison with the Royal Ascot
Master Property Owners
Association. |
|
|
Promote the reduction and
recycling of waste products and
re-use of those generated by
management activities. |
|
|
Exercise the cautionary
principle when dealing with
stressed or endangered
ecosystems where impacts are
unknown or uncertain. |
|
|
Create a model for other
conservation efforts to utilise. |
